The famous Blackpool Illuminations first switched on in 1879. The light show was known as ‘Artificial sunshine’, it was so groundbreaking that it even preceded Thomas Edison’s patent of the electric light bulb by twelve months! The Illuminations still run for 66 days a year, but now, due to advances in technology, only use green energy from renewable resources, comprising wind power, small-scale hydropower and Biogas.
